Susan Cayouette, Ed.D. & Kelly Stewart, M.A.R. discuss their experiences working with lesbian and bisexual abusers at Emerge, a Massachusetts Certified Batterer Intervention Program & Training Site.  They discuss the complexities involved in working with women who abuse their partners, especially if the women have been victim/survivors in previous relationships.  They also explore faith components of abuse in lesbian and bisexual relationships.

Susan Cayouette, Ed.D., is Co-Director of Emerge. Susan has been a group leader and clinical supervisor at Emerge for 28 years and a mental health clinician for 15 years. She has lectured around the United States and in four countries on work with victims and abusers, and she has authored articles on women who work with batterers, lesbians who batter, and the connections between battering and substance abuse. Susan also currently leads an ongoing group at Emerge.

Kelly Stewart, M.A.R. is a PhD student in Theological Studies at Vanderbilt University, concentrating on feminist and queer theory, and Catholic theology and ethics. She co-led the lesbian abuser education group at Emerge, where she was also an anger management counselor and the Office Manager. She has a background in faith-based reproductive justice and LGBTQ activism and received her Master of Arts in Religion from Yale Divinity School in 2013.
